The South Bay connect Team in San Pedro is made up of medical and treatment professionals who are committed to helping patients meet and exceed their rehabilitative goals. All South Bay connect Team members work closely with one another to coordinate the care of our patients on a case-by-case basis.
John Tsuang, M.D., M.S., A.S.A.M.
South Bay connect Outpatient Program
Dr. Tsuang is the Founder and Medical Director of South Bay connect Outpatient Treatment Program. He is a Board Certified Psychiatrist and ASAM addiction specialist serving as the Director of the Dual Diagnosis Treatment Program at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center. He also works as a Clinical Professor for UCLA School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and is actively involved in research on issues pertaining to addiction and mental disorders. With more than 20 years of experience treating dual diagnosis patients, Dr. Tsuang is a foremost authority and world renowned expert in treating patients with mental health and substance abuse problems. He is also additionally trained and certified to provide medically-assisted treatment of addictive disorders using Subutex/Suboxone. Dr. Tsuang is an international lecturer on dual diagnosis and the recipient of numerous teaching and patient care awards. Dr. Tsuang has dedicated his life to the treatment of patients suffering from psychiatric disorders and substance abuse issues. He is actively involved in the recovery process here at South Bay connect and works directly with patients in our “Ask the Doc” group and provides medication management when necessary for patients of South Bay Connect Outpatient Treatment Program. Dr. Tsuang has been collaborating with Alicia and her team of Psychotherapists at Recovery NOW, Inc. and is an expert in psychopharmacology, especially with regards to patients who have had a difficult time stabilizing on medication.
Alicia MacGowan, L.C.S.W., L.A.A.D.C., C.A.I.
South Bay connect Outpatient Program
Alicia MacGowan is the Founder and Clinical Director of South Bay connect Outpatient Treatment Program. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LAADC), and Certified ARISE Interventionist (CAI). She has worked as a mental health professional since 1992, helping individuals achieve sobriety and reconnect with family through individual, group, and family therapy. As the Clinical Director of South Bay connect Outpatient Program, Alicia will take a hands-on approach to treatment, working directly with patients in a group and individual setting. Alicia MacGowan has received additional education and training specific to codependency and chemical dependency. In addition she is the Founder of a group psychotherapy practice, Recovery NOW, Inc.. Through her work in her private practice, she has been supporting the recovery of the whole family system with a team of Psychotherapists. Alicia also provides Interventions and has been coordinating patient treatment with treatment centers across the country. She and Dr. Tsuang work collaboratively to treat patients with drug and alcohol problems and have achieved exceptional outcomes.
Starr Harrison, RN, LMFT
Starr Harrison began her career as a registered nurse and spent the past 20 years practicing as a licensed marriage and family therapist. She is trained as a Somatic Experiencing Therapist and has specialty training in the complexities of substance abuse and codependency. Starr’s style of therapy is supportive and builds on one’s strengths to prevent them from being held back by their limitations. South Bay connect Treatment center is pleased to have Starr as one of their Recovery Team members.
Eugenie Boiadjieva, LCSW
Eugenie is a mental health professional and has practiced as a licensed clinical social worker for 20 years. She is specially trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Eugenie’s style of therapy is engaging and dynamic. She understands addiction and the challenges families face when attempting to reconnect after chemical dependency. She can help individuals identify the triggers associated with relapse and provide tools for managing real-life challenges as they arise. Eugenie is a great addition to our South Bay connect treatment Center team members.
Joel Nelson, MS, RAS, CATC
Joel has been working in the mental health field for over 20 years. He has worked in a number of alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers as well as Los Angeles County and Orange County Department of Mental Health. Joel has exceptional experience and training working with chemical dependency as well as mental health. He has helped many people recover from substance abuse and enjoys being of service to others in recovery as well as their families. South Bay connect Treatment center welcomes Joel to our team of Professionals.
